HALF/ASIAN & Amy the CODA

Since I often find myself travelling for work in the summer, it had been some years since I’ve attended our local music festival: Robson Valley Music Festival. When Amy and Ian inquired about my availability for their set, I was thrilled that I could make it work.

Closing your eyes and listening to Amy & Ian’s show is one thing. Amy’s voice echoes beautifully throughout the surroundings. When Amy and Ian harmonize, you’re in for a real treat. Somehow, the gentle pauses and stretches between the words & synth are just as captivating as when the music is playing.

But if you close your eyes, then you miss out on half of the show. Growing up the child of a deaf adult, Amy incorporates the language of sign into every show. While Ian plays the beats and adds vocals, Amy uses her whole body to share the song with the world. The combination is an entirely new experience.

There are many ways to share stories, but what a beautiful reminder that songs can be felt in such a way. In the absence of audible language, the language of sign/body language is just as loud.

They recently were stars of a documentary: Mother Tongue which delves into their “why”.

Don’t miss out on the chance to see & hear this duo play. And follow them for their full summer festival schedule.
